Forbes magazine has named Sri Lanka as one of the top 23 Best Places to Travel in 2023, in the Europe/Asia category. The list, published on March 30th by Senior Contributor Laura Begley Bloom, features the choices of leading women travel experts and influencers in honor of Women’s History Month. Juliana Broste, a 12-time Heartland Emmy Award-winning travel filmmaker and host, chose Sri Lanka, describing her experience and sharing tips for travelers planning to visit.
According to Bloom, this year’s list of top destinations for 2023 offers a diverse range of options, from European capitals to exotic beaches to sustainable rainforest retreats. However, with travel demand increasing and 31% of travellers intending to spend more on international travel this year, costs are rising and airlines are experiencing record demand, so it’s best not to delay booking that dream trip.

Despite Sri Lanka’s difficulties, visitors will discover that it is a spectacular and affordable destination that is worth the long journey. From the hustle and bustle of Colombo to the stunning beaches, rice fields, waterfalls, plains, and mountains, Sri Lanka is a land that will keep you guessing. Broste highly recommends spotting wildlife in Sri Lanka, such as at an Elephant Sanctuary or on a whale-watching tour.
In addition to its natural beauty, Sri Lanka has numerous cultural attractions to explore, including the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Kandy. When visiting religious sites, it’s important to wear an all-white outfit that covers your shoulders and legs. Broste also recommends watching a traditional Kandyan dance performance, where men and women in traditional dress tell stories through dance.
Nuwara Eliya, known as “Little England,” is a cool climate escape tucked away in the hill country where Ceylon tea, a famous Sri Lankan export, is produced. Visitors can take winding roads through rows of tea bushes and stop in for a cup of tea at a tea factory and plantation. Other must-do activities include sampling king coconut on the side of the road and visiting the top of the shimmering pink Lotus Tower for a bird’s eye view of Colombo.
Sri Lanka has received a lot of attention for its unique tourism offerings and scenic beauty since the beginning of this year. It was recognised as a top wildlife safari destination outside of Africa by Forbes in February and ranked ninth on the list of the 50 most Instagrammable places in the world in 2023 by Big 7 Travel social media data. Additionally, TravelTriangle, a leading online holiday marketplace, ranked it among the top 24 countries to travel in 2023. This continuous global limelight on Sri Lanka for positive and deserving reasons has been a significant boost in showcasing the destination’s appeal.
